This is a unique opportunity to complete to your own specification a rare 1957 Ferrari 250 Elena, one of only 20 surviving cars of just 50 examples built, and to own a Vintage Ferrari Coupe which is eligible for a variety of historic events, including the Mille Miglia.
Currently in primer with all the hard work done, the idea behind this project was to build a fast road/rally car for historic events. To that end it has been fitted with an FIA compliant roll cage and there is also an option to fit a ‘hot’ 250 engine and a set of 38 DCN Carburettors.
History of Carrozzeria Ellena
When in 1956 Enzo Ferrari decided to embark on series production of his 250 GT road cars, he chose design house Pinin Farina of Turin, and as a result the carrozzeria had to build a new factory to handle the output. While this was under construction Baptista Farina delegated the building of the first 82 cars to Carrozzeria Boano, and hence the model acquired the name. But in 1957, following Mario Boano’s departure, his son-in-law, Ezio Ellena took over and the renamed Carrozzeria Ellena produced a further run of just fifty 250 GTs, known as the Ellena Coupes, with improved headroom, courtesy of a slightly raised roofline,
the adoption of a four-speed gearbox with standard shift pattern, larger brakes, a ZF steering system, and the fitment
of a single distributor to the engine, making this an excellent touring car.
Background to this 250 Ellena
According to the Ferrari Classiche Data production sheet this car left the factory in 1957 and was delivered to the German market and Ferrari concessionnaire Auto Becker Dusseldorf.
Little is known of its history, prior to it arriving in the USA in the 1980s. It was here that, like so many other Ferraris, it was fitted with a Chevy V8 engine and transmission. The car still retains its American title/road registration, but in more
recent years was returned to Europe where a full restoration has been started.
Prior to restoration the car was painted red, as in the photos seen here, but the original colour is unknown, and in the US it is thought to have been Grigio.
Given that the car is an early Ellena, built in 1957, it is eligible for historic events like the Mille Miglia, but as non-numbers matching example, the decision was taken to rebuild it as a fast road/rally car with FIA-compliant roll cage and safety equipment.
The car has had a body-off restoration, although the body was found to be in remarkably good condition with only a few localised areas of rust and one small area of accident damage requiring work. The body is now fitted to the restored
chassis and lead-filled and in primer.
The Ellena is largely complete mechanically with off-set gearbox (unrestored); back axle (restored); front suspension (restored); fuel tank; rear brake drums; a set of Borrani wire wheels; original interior (unrestored); all glass and chrome trim;
all original instruments and lights.
There is currently no engine with the car but a complete, ‘hot’ outside plug 250 GTE engine a set of 38 DCN Carburettors is available separately.
NB: The photos below show the car prior to restoration. Current photos are available on request. The main photo is a generic image.
