History of Wayne Obry and Mark Gerisch
Motion Products Inc is a concours-winning restoration shop set up by the legendary Wayne Obry, and is a regular at Amelia Island and Pebble Beach. It was at Pebble Beach that they produced the first ever 100-point Ferrari with a 1953 Ferrari 212 in 1993, around the same time they were completing this SWB recreation. Considered one of the best coachbuilders in America, Mark Gerisch has been at the top of his game for over 35 years. After receiving classical panel beater’s training in England, he returned to America and was soon building cars for the likes of Jay Leno, Bob Lutz, ZZ Top, and the McCaw brothers. His high-quality work recreating Cobras and Ferrari 250s evolved from having first restored many of the originals.
Background to this Ferrari 250 SWB Competizione Recreation
This is an authentic recreation of a 1961/62 Ferrari 250 SWB Competizione, with all the period features unique to the 73 aluminium bodied SWB race models built between 1961-62. The car was commissioned by Tom Zat of Wisconsin, in the late 1980s. A correct period 1962 Ferrari 250 GTE was purchased as a donor car and given to the respected coachbuilder Mark Gerisch to rebuild as a Ferrari 250 SWB Competizione. This is one of four SWBs Gerisch built using Ed Weschler’s SWB for reference, which was in his workshop at the time. This process started with the restoration of the chassis and then the hand crafting of an all aluminium body as an exact copy of the Competizione model, including the Plexiglass sliding windows, outside fuel filler cap, removable roll bar, aluminium fuel tank and the rear screen roof vent. Gerisch is well known for his work on Ferraris, particularly the SWB and GTO models and for many years he looked after Joe Marchetti’s cars.
The completed body/chassis until was then passed to the highly respected and concours-winning workshop Motion Products, run by Wayne Obry, to be assembled and painted in the distinctive silver and blue livery of Le Mans-winning SWB #141 The interior was trimmed in blue leather and fitted with matching blue carpets.
Mechanically the original matching numbers engine and gearbox were rebuilt to SWB Competizione specification by Andy Greene, who is well-known in the States for his work on Ferrari engines.
The engine features polished and ported cylinder heads, larger valves, high-lift (275 GTB specification) camshafts, and Borgo high-compression pistons, and period-correct Tipo 168 timing cover, as found on an original SWB. It is equipped with re-jetted triple-Weber carburettors of larger-than-standard 30mm choke. The gearbox is the GTE original with overdrive deleted and rebuilt to SWB specification. Other features include a large-capacity radiator cooled by two electric fans and Girling dual brake master cylinder and adjustable shock absorbers for road or track. In 2024 the engine was the subject of a full rebuild by highly respected Ferrari specialist Terry Hoyle.
The car has been in long term ownership in two collections in the UK; for nearly 10 years from 1999-2008 when it was purchased from Talacrest and latterly for over 14 years from 2008 when it was purchased in Monaco in 2008.
During this time the car has been little used but well maintained. Mechanically and cosmetically it remains in excellent condition with a light patina that reflects that it has been in its present configuration for over three decades.
